Raise your hand if you had a New Year's Resolution to go into the Spring fresh, clean and organized. Don't worry, we're right here with you. If you're like us, you treated Spring Switchover like a final exam you could cram for and on March 20th, you found yourself with fifty-eleven house projects in various stages of completion...sigh.
But all is not lost. Even though Spring has officially arrived, we're making our way down our Switchover list and it really is making a difference! Here are some of these updates we're making this time around. Some might take an afternoon, others just a few minutes. Either way you can feel a new energy as Spring rolls in.
Tactic 1: Open the Windows in the Morning
Winter apartments stay sealed up for months. Once that mercury goes up and stays up, pull up those windows and let fresh air move through space again. Never mind the fire-truck sirens or the distant subway rumble — that’s just Brooklyn waking up. All it takes is five minutes for that stale air to find it's way out.
Tactic 2: Change Your (Granola) Starting Lineup
Winter calls for Chai Time. March? Not so much. That granola you’ve been reaching for since October is warm, spiced, and heavier. It made sense on cold mornings when you needed a little incentive to get out of bed and face the world.
Right now your breakfast bowl is asking for something lighter and our Build-A-Bundles make it easy to refresh your breakfast lineup. Lighter flavors feel right for early spring — try Say Olé with yogurt and blueberries for a lighter touch. An easy seasonal reset to start your day strong.
Tactic 3: Retire the Heavy Candle
That candle you burned through January belongs to winter. Smoky, spicy, and deep vanilla hit the mark when 4:00PM looks like midnight outside and you're struggling to keep your eyes open on the Metro North back to Connecticut.
One way to lighten up the mood is with Fort Greene Fresh. Light citrus notes with a hint of mint feels like cracking open a window on a country morning...even if that country is Midtown Manhattan.
Tactic 3: Do One Small Spring Cleaning Task
Spring cleaning doesn’t need to mean an entire weekend of scrubbing. According to quick-cleaning guides from Real Simple, even short ten-minute cleaning bursts can make a noticeable difference in your space.
Pick one small task that makes a visible difference.
- Wipe down the kitchen counters.
- Clear off the entryway table.
- Organize the shelf where mail piles up.
Small resets create momentum. Once one corner looks lighter, the rest of the space starts asking for attention. Ten minutes can change how the whole room feels.
Tactic 5: Add One Plant to a Sunny Spot
Early spring light finds places in the apartment you didn’t notice during winter. Try a small plant in that newly discovered spot and see how the whole corner takes on a new personality. Snake plants well and don't require much maintenance. The green adds life to the room and remind us that the outside is literally turning over a new leaf.
Tactic 6: Rotate Your Closet for Lighter Layers
Cool one minute and then warm the next, Spring weather is nothing if not unpredictable and can wreak havoc on your wardrobe! Get ready for some serious layering by moving heavier sweaters toward the back of the closet and bring lighter layers forward. Cardigans, light knits, denim jackets, and light scarves all make the grade. Suddenly, your closet is easier to navigate, and getting dressed won't make you want to break out in a cold sweat.
Tactic 7: Change Where You Drink Your Morning Coffee
By the time Spring comes around, the best seat in the apartment is often near the window. Instead of standing up at the kitchen counter (we know, we do it too), move a chair toward the light or even sit near the fire escape while your morning brew makes its way to your brain. While you're at it, take some slow, deep breaths in a mini-meditation before you take on the dragons of the day
